How to boil Mussels

Mussels are a delicious seafood product. Furthermore, to avoid any health risks that come with raw Mussels, cooking them helps to kill any organisms that can harm our health. Cleaning your Mussels

The first thing that you will need to do is to clean your Mussels. You can do this in the following way.

  1. Scrub your Mussels with a brush under cold water.
  2. Remove any barnacles by scraping them off with a knife.
  3. As for any byssal threads, pull them out and cut them with a knife.

Boiling your Mussels

Now that you have cleaned your Mussels we shall now move on to discuss the process of effectively boiling them.

  1. Take 1 cup of water and pour it into a 3 litre pot and bring it to a boil.
  2. Once you have done so, place your Mussels into your pot, cover it and reduce the heat to a medium level.
  3. Let your Mussels cook for 3 to 7 minutes. Stir them occasionally as they cook. Be sure to check on them after they have cooked for 3 minutes.
  4. One of the signs indicating that your Mussels have been cooked is their shells opening after you have cooked them.
  5. If any Mussels that you are cooking remain unopened, discard them as they are not suitable for consumption.
  6. Furthermore, make sure that you check to see if there is any rancid fishy smell coming from your mussels. If there is any bad smell, discard them as well because they are also not suitable to be eaten. 
  7. Once you have seen that your Mussels are appropriately boiled you can scoop them up and serve them with a drizzle of olive oil and some seasoning or with a delicious broth to add to its flavour.
