Singapore is well known to be home to a variety of different cuisines. This is thanks to the Lion City being a melting pot of different cultures. One type of food haunt that exemplifies this is the hawker centre, a type of grand food court where you can find different kinds of cuisine such as Chinese, Malay, Indian, Western food and many more hidden gems. Sometimes you can even find different ethnic variations of the same dish. An example of this is Mutton soup, a dish which comes in Indian and Chinese variations. Today we shall be looking at the Chinese variety that can be found at Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre.
A herbal treat!
Located at the third floor of the Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre at Stall unit number #03-156 The Taman Jurong Branch of Hougang Jing Jia Mutton Soup served up Mutton soup in a variety of ways which included Mutton Tendon Soup, Mutton Meatball Soup, Mutton Rib soup or the Mixed soup that has a mixture of the individual ingredients used in other the other soup variations that the stall has. I ordered a Mutton rib soup for about $5. (There are different prices depending on the size of your soup serving, $4 for the smallest, $5 for medium size and $6 for a large soup serving, prices may be different online perhaps due to additional service charges). Extra charges may apply for rice should you request for it.
Now onto an analysis of the dish proper. It had a delicious earthy and herbal taste thanks to the parsley leaves and the overall mix of herbs that was used in the soup. The meat of the mutton (which comes from Australian and New Zealand sheep) was also very tender and easy to chew which made for a very pleasant gastronomic experience. All in all, the soup served by this hawker stall is an interesting gastronomic experience that you should consider trying out.
