How to make Rendang

A dish that is very much beloved by many is Rendang. This delicious and flavourful dish can include a variety of ingredients. Have you always wanted to make Rendang for yourself but did not know how to do so? How about trying this recipe out? Shall we begin? Great! Let us get started with it.

Ingredients

Let us first get acquainted with the ingredients that you will need for this recipe.

Ingredients for the Spice Paste/Rempah
.10 almonds

.1 and a half inches of galangal/blue ginger

.1 and a half inches of ginger

.6 red chillies

.10 shallots

.8 cloves of garlic

.3 sticks of lemon grass
Other Ingredients
.500 g of chicken/mutton/beef

.600 ml of coconut milk

.6 kaffir lime leaves

.1 teaspoon of dried tamarind 

.1 turmeric leaf

.2 Bay leaves 

.2 pieces of star anise

.1 and a half teaspoons of salt

.1 and a half  teaspoons of sugar

.Half a teaspoon of black pepper 

.2 to 3 tablespoons of cooking oil

Serving Size: 2 to 4 people depending on how much you make.

Preparation Process

  1. Prepare and grind your spice paste in a blender: Chop red chillies, shallots, garlic, almonds, lemongrass. Put the mix into a blender. Add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil into the blender and grind into a paste. Set it aside.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of oil into a pan, add star anise, dried tamarind,  bay leaves and kaffir lime leaves and stir until it becomes aromatic. Add your meat and stir for two more minutes before adding your spice paste . Season everything with salt, sugar and black pepper. 
  3. Keep stirring your mixture at medium heat for 10 minutes. Add your coconut milk and stir well. When it starts simmering, taste the gravy and add more salt if necessary. Let the gravy simmer at low heat for half an hour until the gravy thickens. Once your gravy has thickened it is ready to be served.
